Course Summary

This book is for anyone who wants to develop expertise in behaviour-change. It combines two powerfully effective approaches to counselling psychology: motivational interviewing and solution-focused brief therapy. From motivational interviewing, you will learn how to fully engage with clients and help them evoke their own motivation by emphasising personal strengths and aspirations for change. Standard behaviour change interventions aim to make clients better by removing the problem, however, ‘better’ is an ill-defined concept. Solution-focused brief therapy defines ‘better’ through the development of something known as a solution state. Think of this as the best version of you that you can be. This creatively removes dependence upon willpower, a limited resource at best, and clears the path toward efficient and successful behaviour change for your clients. This book will show you how to supplement your technical expertise with 21st century mind coaching. As you read this book it will become clear that there are no difficult clients, only unskilled communicators. Along the way, you will learn about decision science, systems thinking and the brain chemistry of motivation. For a book of its kind, it is relatively short, the purpose of which is to ensure that all the key points are conveyed concisely and efficiently, making it an easy to use resource for anyone interested in the science of behaviour change. Three different case studies are presented to facilitate understanding and learning activities are presented throughout.
